Coastal looks to nab a win on Family Weekend

After a 15-point, fourth quarter comeback came up short on Sept. 30, the Chanticleers return to Brooks Stadium this weekend to get a much-needed win over Sun Belt opponent Georgia State.

Coastal is currently on a three-game losing streak, the longest since their four-game losing streak back in 2012. The Chanticleers would end up turning things around that season, finishing 8-5 and getting their first ever FCS Playoff win before falling to Old Dominion in the FCS Second Round.

While the defense stepped up their game in the final quarter against the Warhawks, the team did allow 50-plus points, again. This is the first time in Coastal Carolina history that the team has given up 50 or more points in back-to-back games.

Coastal Carolina had only given up 50-plus points just five times since Joe Moglia took over the team back in 2012.

The team that Coastal plays this weekend, Georgia State, is not the best of the Sun Belt schools, but the team should not definitely overlook the Panthers.

In the past five years, the Panthers have gone 12-51, including two one-win seasons. But, in their last game against Charlotte on Sept. 23, the Panthers got their first win of the 2017 season, shutting out the Niners 28-0.

Their game against Memphis this past week was cancelled after Memphis had to play a rescheduled conference game against Central Florida. The UCF-Memphis game was originally meant to be played on Sept. 9, but due to Hurricane Irma, the game was postponed. This means that the Panthers now have had two weeks to review tapes of Coastal and be more prepared for Saturday’s game.

Panther’s quarterback, Tanner Manning, has thrown 542 yards this season and will certainly be a main focal point for the Chanticleers defense, which has given up 853 yards through air this season.

While it seems Coastal’s passing game was finally found this past weekend against ULM, it needs to remain consistent. There can be no mistakes this weekend against the Panthers.

Coastal will loom to improve to 2-3 and get their first win in the Sun Belt during Family Weekend at Brooks Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7.
