History of mass shootings in modern U.S. history

The phrase coined yet again following the events that took place in Las Vegas earlier this month is the “deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.”

This is a list on gun violence seen since 1966.

On Aug. 1, 1966, in Austin, Texas, Charles Joseph Whitman, a former US Marine, killed 16 and wounded at least 30 while shooting from a University of Texas tower.

On July 18, 1984, in San Ysidro, California, 41-year-old James Huberty, armed with a long-barreled Uzi, a pump-action shotgun and a handgun shot and killed 21 adults and children at a local McDonald's.

On Oct. 16, 1991, in Killeen, Texas, 35-year-old George Hennard crashed his pickup truck through the wall of Luby's Cafeteria. After exiting the truck, Hennard shot and killed 23 people.

On Dec. 14, 2012, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, 20-year-old Adam Lanza gunned down 20 children, ranging in ages 6 and 7. Six adults were also killed before he turned the gun on himself.

On April 16, 2007, at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, 23-year-old Seung-Hui Cho, goes on a shooting spree which killed 32 people in two locations and wounded an undetermined number of others.

On June 12, 2016, 29-year-old Omar Saddiqui Mateen opened fire inside Pulse, a gay nightclub, in Orlando. He killed 49 people, injuring at least 50.

On Oct. 1, 2017, in Las Vegas, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada, rained gunfire on a crowd of 22,000 concertgoers from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. He killed 58 people and injured almost 500 before killing himself.

These are just some of the mass shootings that have been experienced in the U.S, any of which millennials have experienced in their lifetimes alone.
