Coastal falls to Troy, 42-17

Coastal football fell to Troy University 42-17 at Brooks Stadium.

Marcus Jones returned the opening kickoff for 91 yards for a Troy touchdown, giving the Trojans a 7-0 lead within the first 15 seconds of the game.

Coastal was able to have a good drive and get to the Troy 16- yard line, but junior quarterback Kilton Anderson's pass was intercepted by Troy and the first drive of Anderson's first career start as a Chanticleer ended in bad taste.

However, the defense stepped up on the next drive and sophomore cornerback Preston Carey picked off Troy and was able to return it to the Troy 31. Troy’s defense forced Coastal to kick a field goal as Evan Rabon notched a 39-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.

Once again, Jones added another kickoff return, this time going 87 yards to the end zone, increasing the Trojans' lead to 14-3.

But, that didn’t stop the Chanticleer offense. Anderson found sophomore wide receiver Malcolm Williams for a 31-yard touchdown pass. The Chanticleers cut the lead to 14-10 late in the first quarter.

Troy would get two more touchdowns on their next two possessions to go into the half with a 28-10 lead over the Chanticleers.

To start the second half, Coastal used 9 plays to go 82 yards, capping the drive off with a 44-yard touchdown pass from Anderson to senior wide receiver Chris Jones put the Chanticleers behind by 11 points.

Before the end of the third quarter, Troy was able to get another touchdown to push the lead to 35-17. With 6:44 left in the game, Troy threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to give the final score in Conway, 42-17. The Chanticleers are 1-9 overall and 0-6 in Sun Belt play.

Coastal will travel to play next weekend in Moscow, Idaho, against the Idaho Vandals. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
