AKA celebrates Skee Week

This week was a very important week for the Oh so pretty ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. As many of you saw on various platforms, they had a week long full of different activities you could engage in.

Vice President Mikayla Prioleau shared what Skee Week was and its purpose.

“Skee week is a week that we, as members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, use to celebrate our founders by hosting events for the campus community that fall up under our targets," said Prioleau. "The purpose is to show the campus who we are and what we do.”

Being in a sorority takes time, dedication and hard work. But, before you can go anywhere, you need to know about its history and values.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. was founded on January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. This year, 2018 makes 110 years that we have been around, and a continuing legacy of sisterhood, scholarship and service to all mankind.

When you are initiated and have become an AKA, you become a woman of substance. A woman of good character and integrity. You are held to high standards because you are that sorority. Prioleau shared her thoughts on what she thought it was like to be an Alpha woman.

“Being an Alpha woman to me is beyond what words can say," said Prioleau. "This is something that I have always wanted growing up. Because I am representing something bigger than myself, I feel honored to be a part of such a wonderful organization and sisterhood.”

This week's activities were: “How to get away with service:" MLK Community Awards Breakfast, “The Get Down:" Hip hop aerobics, “20 Reasons Why:" Financial Fitness Workshop, “Green is the New Pink:" Recycle Drive and “She’s gotta have it:" Minute to win it.

All of these themes are Netflix inspired and service oriented with the main purpose of this sorority being to give back and have an impact on the community.

“I hope that everyone who attended our events is able to see the work that we do on this campus and also the time and effort that we put into organizing these things," said Prioleau. "I want them to leave with positive thoughts about our organization.”

As this week came to an end and they went through with their events, Prioleau was able to give feedback on how she thought this week went.

“I think that all of our events turned about to be pretty good and also very beneficial to those who attended," said Prioleau. "I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves as well as were able to take something away from them.”
