Coastal men's basketball streak ends at UTA

February 6, 2018

The Chanticleers split the series down in Texas, defeating Texas State on Thursday but fell to Texas-Arlington on Saturday, Feb. 3.

The Chanticleers beat Texas State in overtime 56-54 on Thursday, Feb. 1 in San Marcos, Texas.

The first half was filled with good defense. Both teams shot just 36 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes of play. Sophomore guard Artur Labinowicz had eight points in the first half and Zachary Cuthbertson added six points. The Chanticleers had a 24-23 lead heading into overtime.

Coastal outrebounded Texas State 18-15, but turnovers hurt their chances of getting anything going offensively.

The second half of the game was close just like the first half. Tied at 49 with just seconds to go in regulation, a missed runner from Jaylen Shaw sent the game into overtime.

The Chanticleers were on the board first with Demario Beck knocking down free throws to put them up 51-49. With 2:38 left in OT, Freshman guard Tre Brown hit a three that would give them a three-point lead of 54-51.

With just 15 seconds left, Texas State had the opportunity to seal the game, but a turnover would give the Chanticleers one last chance. The ball was in Shaw’s hand, and he gave the ball off to Beck whose shot went in with just over one second to go, giving the Chanticleers the win.

Beck had just two points prior to his game winner. Shaw had 10 points, and a game high of four assists.

The Chanticleers wanted to keep their four-game win streak alive in Arlington, Texas, but they fell 87-80 Saturday night against UT-Arlington.

Cuthbertson recorded his fourth double-double, scoring 15 points and pulled down a team-high of 11 rebounds.

Demario Beck went five-of-seven from the field and had 13 points. He also pulled down seven rebounds.

Tre Brown had a career high of 12 points, and Artur Labinowicz finished with 10 points.

The Chanticleers shot 45 percent from the field, and they were 89.5 percent from the free throw line. The big difference in this game was free throws with UTA shot 19 more free throws than Coastal.

Coastal outrebounded UTA 38-36 and outscored them 34-24 in the paint.

The loss ended the Chanticleers' four-game win streak but the team will look to get back to winning ways next weekend.

The Chanticleers will be back home next Saturday against Appalachian State at 3:30 p.m.
