Coastal Carolina baseball improved to 10-3 this weekend after winning three of their four games this week.
The Chanticleers picked up a10-5 win over UNC-Wilmington on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at Brooks Stadium thanks to three separate Chanticleers recording two RBIs in the win.
Cory Wood, Lee Sponseller and Zach Biermann all tallied two RBIs while Anthony Simonelli pitched five complete innings and recorded five strikeouts as he improved to 2-0 on the season.
While UNCW was able to tie things up in the top of the third inning, Sponseller notched a two-run double in the bottom of the third to help the Chants take a 5-3 lead. The Seahawks would get within one run at the top of the fourth inning but the Chants would score three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 8-4.
After UNCW scored one run in the following inning, Coastal would get two more runs in the sixth to push the lead to 10-5.
On Friday, Mar. 2, the Chanticleers got out to an early 4-0 lead against Ball State but Ball State made a rally in the fourth inning to make it 4-3 in favor of the Chants.
Coastal added another run in the fifth inning but gained some more breathing room after Woody Woodall hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Chanticleers a 6-3 victory.
The following day, the Chants suffered only their third loss of the season after Maryland came into Brooks Stadium and defeated Coastal 7-6. The highlight of the evening was a late Chanticleer rally when Seth Lancaster hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to push the Chants within a single run but the comeback ultimately fell short.
On Sunday, Mar. 3, the Chanticleers faced off against former Big South rival Radford and thanks to an eight-run eighth inning, the Chanticleers were able to come away with a 13-7 win.
The scored was tied at three runs apiece going into the bottom of the seventh inning and Woodall was able to break the deadlock with a two-run homerun to make it 5-3.
The following inning, the Chanticleers poured it on Radford by scoring eight runs. The highlight of the inning was a grand slam by Matt Beaird to make it 11-3. Coastal would tack on two more runs and while Radford scored four in the top of the ninth to make it 13-7, the pitching of Dylan Gentry was able to end the rally and give the Chanticleers the victory.
