On March 14th, there will be a National School Walkout event at CCU starting at 10 a.m. The demonstration will last 17 minutes in honor of each victim of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting that occurred on Feb. 14.
The walkout is being organized by Students Advocating Gender Equality (SAGE), CCU Social Justice Warriors and Coastal Democrats.
The President of SAGE, Krystina Millar, was inspired to participate in the event because of the travesty in Florida.
"We are participating in the National School Walkout because we refuse to allow the pattern of gun violence and lack of action by the government," said Millar. "Students from across the nation are walking out of their classrooms in honor of the 17 that lost their lives in Florida and in protest of the continued complicity of Congress in regards to gun violence."
There will be a demonstration on Prince Lawn at 10:50 a.m. to ensure that students are aware of the purpose behind the walkout, and the significance of it lasting 17 minutes.
There will also be a panel discussion focused on gun control following the event in order for the conversation to continue after the demonstration. SAGE is the only organization that has been announced to be sponsoring it as of yet.
Other organizations are invited to help support and coordinate this event. If you are interested in getting involved, contact Millar at email@example.com for more information.
