Coastal suffers first Sun Belt loss
Despite falling to Georgia Southern 5-4 on Saturday, March 31, the Coastal Carolina baseball moved up in the Baseball America poll from 24th to 18th.
After falling to College of Charleston on March 27 by a score of 11-4, the Chanticleers won their third straight Sun Belt Conference series this weekend taking two out of the three games against Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga.
In game one on March 29, the Chanticleers trailed the Eagles 2-0 after the first inning but came back to pull off a 7-3 win to open the series.
Jason Bilous struck out 10 batters and picked up the win, improving his record to 4-0 on the year.
The Chanticleers hit three home runs in the four-run win over the Eagles, with Seth Lancaster, Woody Woodall and Zach Biermann going yard. Biermann, who missed last week’s series due to illness, hit his seventh home run of the season.
In game two of the series, the Chanticleers would score four runs in both the first and fifth inning and five runs in the seventh inning to cruise past Georgia Southern 15-2.
Seth Lancaster would hit a home run for the second time in the series and Anthony Veneziano would strike out eight batters and get the win for the Chanticleers to improve his record on the mound to 3-0.
In the series finale, the Eagles would put up five runs against the Chanticleers in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 5-1. In the eighth inning, Woodall would hit his second home run of the series and his 12th home run of the season to ignite a potential comeback for the Chanticleers.
Kieton Rivers would hit a home run in the top of the ninth to bring the score to 5-3 and Turner Buis would score courtesy of a Lancaster ground out but there was not enough left in the tank as the Chanticleers would fall to the Eagles 5-4.
The Chanticleers now improve to 21-9 on the season and 8-1 in the Sun Belt Conference. Coastal will continue its five-game road swing on Tuesday, April 3 at nationally-ranked Clemson. First pitch is set for 6:30 pm at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The last time Coastal and Clemson faced off on the baseball diamond, the Chanticleers won 9-5 on a walk-off grand slam.
