Coastal softball continues to struggle in conference play

April 4, 2018

This past weekend, the Coastal Carolina softball team traveled to Monroe, Louisiana to take on the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks.

The ladies would be swept by the Warhawks, extending their losing streak to four games.

Friday was a tough day for the team, losing the doubleheader. However, the team almost walked away with a win during the second game.

In game one, the Warhawks would score three runs in the sixth inning to make it 8-0, causing officials to call the game early.

The second game that Friday was a different story.

In the second inning, Natalie David hit a homer that put the chants on the board. The homeruns continued with Courtney Dean hitting a homer in the third, bringing in three runs and tying up the game.

In the fifth inning, Chelsea D’Avilar hit the third homerun of the game and brought in three more runs, putting the Chants in the lead 8-6.

Monroe would tie things up in the bottom of the fifth inning but Natalie David would prove to be clutch, bringing in a run at the top of the sixth inning to make it a 9-8 game.

While the Chants were able to hold the Warhawks scoreless in bottom of the sixth, the Chants would go down in order in the top of the seventh and Monroe would take full advantage.

With the bases loaded, Monroe would get a grand slam to win the game 12-9.

In the final game of the series, despite going down 4-0 after the first two innings, the Chanticleers would cut the deficit in half late in the game. However, the Warhawks would put four runs on the Chants in the bottom of the sixth inning and pull away with an 8-2 win and sweep Coastal.

The sweep puts the Chanticleers at 17-20 on the season and 2-10 in Sun Belt Conference play.

The ladies will play their next game on Wednesday, April 4 against Duke.

This is the first-ever matchup between the Chanticleers and the Blue Devils.

First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
