Coastal Carolina postpones athletic contests ahead of Hurricane Florence

September 13, 2018

With Hurricane Florence looking to directly affect the Grand Strand area this week and throughout the weekend, the Coastal Carolina Athletic Department released information about several sporting events that were supposed to happen this weekend.

Coastal Carolina had their football game against Campbell on Wednesday, Sep. 12 in Buies Creek, N.C. on the campus of Campbell University.  The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Sep. 15 in Conway at Brooks Stadium.

Senior running back Marcus Outlow talked about the changes of plan and how the team was feeling ahead of Wednesday’s match.

“We were prepared for the game, for sure,” said Outlow. “The biggest thing was focusing and locking in completely.”

The Chanticleers defeated Campbell 58-21 Wednesday night. The team reached Jacksonville, Fla. early Thursday morning.

“We will stay in Jacksonville for a couple days and see what happens back home in Myrtle Beach,” said Outlow. “We will leave for Louisiana from Jacksonville if it is still pretty bad back home.”

The Chanticleers face-off against the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns in Lafayette, La. on Saturday, Sep. 22. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Coastal Carolina women’s soccer program relocated to Georgia this past week and will train at Kennesaw State University. Their game against Arkansas-Little Rock will played at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sep. 14 in Kennesaw, Georgia. The Chanticleers match versus Arkansas State that was originally scheduled for Sunday, Sep. 16 will be rescheduled at a later date.

Sophomore goalkeeper Rylee Atteberry talked about how the team is handling the relocation.

“We’re still in season so it just feels like a long trip,” said Atteberry. “We have to treat it like a long trip because we still have business to take care while on the road regardless of the circumstances. The coaches are still trying to make it as normal as possible because it is pretty stressful and tiring being on the road for so long.”

Atteberry also discussed how the team will handle the possibility of being away from campus for weeks on end.

“I think we are really trying to swallow it a week at a time,” said Atteberry. “If we can get where we need to be now and play our game on Friday, we can move onto the next stage is finding out where we are going. If we have to move around, then that’s what we do.”

The Chanticleers next game after Friday’s match against Little Rock will be on the road to Foley, Ala. to take on the five-time defending Sun Belt Champions in South Alabama. That game is scheduled for Friday, Sep. 21 at 7 p.m.

The women’s soccer team next home game is Saturday, Sep. 29 against Appalachian State.

As for the men’s soccer team, their match against Radford that was originally scheduled for Tuesday, Sep. 11 at 7 p.m. was moved up four hours earlier after Coastal Carolina University officials decided to cancel classes and close campus for Tuesday. However, once South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster ordered a mandatory evacuation for the coastal counties of South Carolina, the game was canceled.

The Chanticleers were also so supposed to take on George Mason on Sunday, Sep. 16 at CCU Soccer Stadium in Conway but that match was later canceled. Neither match has been rescheduled at this time.

The men’s soccer program is currently in Orlando, Fla. training ahead of their next match will be on the road at William & Mary. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Williamsburg, Va.

Coastal Carolina volleyball intended to host the Coastal Carolina Classic but that tournament has been cancelled and the team will not compete this weekend. The Chanticleers will be back in action on the road as they open conference play at Georgia State on Saturday, Sep. 21.

When it comes to the men’s and women’s cross-country programs, their meet in Rock Hill, S.C. that was scheduled for Saturday, Sep. 15 has been cancelled due to the possible affects that Hurricane Florence may have in the Midlands. Makeup dates have not been announced.

The cross country teams will return to action in Bethlehem, Penn. as they will compete in Lehigh University’s Paul Short Invitational on Saturday, Sep. 29.

The women’s tennis program was supposed to open their fall season in the College of Charleston Tournament. With that tournament being cancelled, the Chants will begin their fall slate of matches at the UNC Charlotte Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. from Oct. 5-6.

Both Coastal Carolina men’s and women’s golf programs will continue to compete in their respective tournaments. The women’s golf team will begin their 2018 season as planned as they participate in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships from Knoxville, Tenn.

The men’s golf team will remain on the road as they play in the Northern Intercollegiate out in Sugar Grove, Ill. this weekend.
