Coastal women's soccer inches closer to top spot in Sun Belt

October 10, 2018

The Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team got back to winning ways over the weekend, defeating Louisiana-Lafayette and Louisiana-Monroe on Friday, Oct. 5 and Sunday, Oct. 7, respectively, at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

The Chanticleers faced off with the Ragin’ Cajuns on Friday night in the team’s first home match since UNC-Wilmington on Sep. 6.

Coastal Carolina was the more dominant team throughout the night, out-shooting the Cajuns 15 to 6. While the score was tied at nil-nil going into the halftime break, Coastal would open the floodgates and start finding the back of the net.

The Chanticleers opened the scoring in the second half with a goal in the 62nd minute by Mackenzie Cherry. Seven minutes later, senior Lauren Dabner found the back of the net for her second goal of the season to put the Chanticleers up 2-0.

Not even 45 seconds later, Baylee Price put the Chants up 3-0 with a rocket of a shot from outside the box, securing victory for the Chanticleers.

Coastal followed up Friday’s win with another shutout victory, defeating the Warhawks of Louisiana-Monroe 1-0 on Sunday.

The lone goal in the match was scored on a penalty kick by Heston Neal.

The Chanticleers are now in second place in the Sun Belt Conference with 15 points and are four points behind Texas State. After a rough 1-4-1 start to the season, the Chanticleers are now 6-5-1 heading into the final stretch of the season.

Coastal Carolina travels to Georgia to play Georgia Southern on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. The Chants will then take the trip to Atlanta to play Georgia State on Sunday, Oct. 14. Kickoff for that game is set for 1 p.m.
