Coastal thrashes USC Upstate, 5-1

After two difficult losses against top quality opponents, the Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team got back in the win column with a 5-1 win over USC Upstate on Saturday, Oct. 6 at CCU Soccer Stadium.
Despite going down early in the first half, the Chanticleers responded with goals in the 26th and 40th minute by forwards Tsiki Ntsabeleng and Tyrone Mondi. Yazeed Matthews assisted both goals.
The Chants had a 2-1 lead going into the half and continued their attacking pressure early in the second half.
Coastal scores 3 goals in a 10-minute span early in the second half.
After getting two assists in the second half, Yazeed Matthews got on the score sheet with a powerful shot from inside the box to make it 3-1 in the 53rd minute.
Just past the hour mark, senior Ryan Willoughby scored his first career goal as a Chanticleer with an acrobatic diving header.
Two minutes later, a mixup in the back between an Upstate defender and the Upstate goalkeeper allowed Paul Odendahl to find Tyrone Mondi at the top of the box for an easy open-net strike.
Mondi’s brace made it 5-1 on the night and assured victory for the Chanticleers.
CCU now moves to 5-3 on the year. The Chanticleers have a crucial matchup with Appalachian State this weekend as the Mountaineers are 6–2-2 and looking to avenge last season’s 4-0 loss to CCU.
Kickoff between the Chanticleers and the Mountaineers is at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 at CCU Soccer Stadium.
