Coastal Carolina prepares for homecoming showdown with Appalachian State

There is a lot riding on this weekend for Coastal Carolina football.

It is homecoming weekend. Appalachian State, a Sun Belt powerhouse in recent years, is in town. And finally, there is a chance that Coastal Carolina can become bowl-eligible for the first time in program history should the Chanticleers pull out the win.

However, if you bring up bowl games in front of head coach Joe Moglia, you won’t hear much on this topic.

“The kids don’t hang out in my office and I don’t hang out in their office. So, I haven’t heard anything from them about this talk of going to a bowl game,” said Moglia. “However, that is not something you are going to hear me bring up. Every team in FBS wants to go to a bowl game. Who doesn’t want to go to a bowl game? Everybody does. The key for our guys isn’t necessarily about going to the bowl game, the key is how do we achieve that. Everything we talk about in regards to the BAM principle is all about how do we maximize our potential. If we maximize our potential, all those things that we are striving for will fall into place.”

Coastal Carolina has not seen postseason action since falling at home to the Citadel in the first round of the 2015 FCS Playoffs. Fans are hoping that they can make a trip out of state for a bowl game, but in order for that to happen this weekend the Chanticleers need to pull off the upset over a talented App State.

Moglia talked about the talent that App State brings to the table and elaborated on his game plan for Saturday.

“App State executes really, really, really, really well,” said Moglia. “They have great depth and they are very aggressive.”

Appalachian State comes into Saturday’s game against Coastal Carolina off of a loss against Georgia Southern. Appalachian State was ranked going into that game and after losing their starting quarterback midway through the first quarter, the Mountaineers never seemed to recover and ended up losing the game 34-14, as well as losing their ranking.

Dating back to last season, as well as the two teams’ days in FCS, Coastal Carolina has never beaten Appalachian State.

The Chanticleers look to change that and make some history in the process this Saturday at Brooks Stadium. Kickoff for Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State is set for 5 p.m.
