Coastal tops North Carolina Central in Durham

As they traveled to Durham, North Carolina this past weekend, the Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team defeated North Carolina Central by a score of 89-66.

Leading the Chanticleers was Dj Williams as she scored 23 points, six assists, and seven steals. Williams was 10 of 13 from the field. Behind her was Naheria Hamilton with 11 points, while Breelyn Blanding pulled down nine rebounds with seven points and four assists.

Both teams struggled with controlling the ball in the first half of play. Both tallied 19 turnovers in just the first 20 minutes but Coastal managed to get 12 points off those turnovers.

With the Chants scoring 43 points in the first half of the game, 30 of those points were in the paint.

Starting the third quarter on a 14-2 run, the Chants were looking to pull away and went into the fourth quarter with a 65-53 lead.

The Chants then went on 8-0 and 7-0 runs and that would seal the game.

The Chanticleers improved to 5-1 on the year. That is the team’s best start to a season since 2011-2012, when the team began the season going 6-1.

The Chants look to improve their three-game win streak and return to the HTC Center on Wednesday to play Meredith College. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
