Coastal handles App State with ease over the weekend

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers defeated the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Saturday, Jan. 18th by a finals score of 89-72 to move to 8-9 on the season.

Senior Forward Zac Cuthbertson continued his incredible season by dropping a game-high 24 points to lead four Chanticleers in double figures - Ebrima Dibba with 12, DeVante Jones with 12, and Ajay Sanders with 14.

Coastal Carolina had the best start to a game all season as they jumped out to a 16-0 game to start the season, while stretching their lead to a game-high 23 points with 4:07 to go in the game.

The Chanticleers bested the Mountaineers in nearly every major statistical category. Their field goal percentage was 50%-39.6%, total rebounds were 37-29, assists were 18-10, steals were 13-8, and three-point percentage was 47.6%-28.6% en route to their 17-point victory.

Even though the Chanticleers did turn the ball over a total of 14 times, they limited App. State to only 9 points off those turnovers while simultaneously turning 10 App. State turnovers into 23 points. While Coastal did make 10 three-pointers on the game, their victory came in the paint, as they outscored App. State 38-14 inside the paint.

For App. State, guard Justin Forrest led the team with 21 points on 6-15 shooting as the only Mountaineer to reach double figures, proving to be the one bright spot for the App. State team.

This was truly a game of runs, as App. State did make things interesting by going on a run that cut down Coastal’s lead to three at the start of the second half. In what felt like a blink of an eye, the Chanticleers responded to increase their lead to 23 and never looking back.

Coastal Carolina will attempt to carry this momentum with them as they head to Little Rock to take on the Trojans this Thursday, Jan. 24th. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m.
