Coastal baseball ends Seattle Baseball Showcase with tie against top-ranked Oregon State

The No. 16 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers traveled to Seattle, WA over the weekend to participate in the Seattle Baseball Showcase. Over three games, the Chants lost to the University of San Diego, beat the University of Washington, and tied No. 1 Oregon State University.

No. 16 Coastal Carolina fell to 12-3 on the season as they lost 8-5 in an eight-inning game that was shortened due to time restrictions.

A three and a half hour time limit for each game played at the Seattle Baseball Showcase resulted in the game being called after eight complete innings. The Chanticleers went into the top of the eight leading 5-2 but it all unraveled for Coastal as San Diego scored six runs in the top of the eighth.

Cameron Pearcey, Zac Biermann, Parker Chavers, and Scot Mckeon drove in runs for Coastal Carolina, while Tora Otsuka, Ripken Reyes, Paul Kunst, and Jeff Houghtby drove in runs for San Diego.

Chanticleer freshman Alaska Abney took the loss while giving up four runs on two hits, walking one, hitting one, and throwing a wild pitch over 0.1 innings of work.

Owen Noah got the win for San Diego as he gave up no runs on no hits, walking one, hitting one, and striking out none over 1.2 innings.

No. 16 Coastal Carolina defeated the University of Washington by a final score of 5-2 on the back of 7.0 innings from starting pitcher Austin Kitchen.

Kitchen gave up two runs over his 7.0 complete innings while allowing five hits, one walk and striking out seven – a career high – en route to his third win of the season.

The offense was led by Kieton Rivers, who went 1-4 with a double and 3 RBI. Kyle Skeels and Corey Wood each drove in a run as well. Keaton Wiesz, Zac Biermann, Jared Johnson, and Cameron Pearcey all added hits as well.

The loss fell on Washington pitcher Jordan Jones, who gave up four runs while walking two and striking out eight over 7.1 innings of work.

No. 16 Coastal Carolina battled No. 1 Oregon State University every step of the way as they tied 4-4 in an 11 inning game that was called due to a three and a half hour time limit.

All four of Coastal’s runs came in the 5th inning, three of those runs came courtesy of a bases-loaded double by Zac Biermann that drove in three. Scott McKeon added an RBI single to make the score 4-3 in the favor of CCU. Oregon State would score one in the top of the 9th to tie the game at four, where it would remain for the rest of the game.

Freshman starter Garrett McDaniels went 4.1 innings while giving up three runs on four hits, walking two and striking out three.

The tie pushes CCU’s record to 13-3-1 on the season. The Chants will travel to take on No. 20 Clemson on March 13 at 6 p.m.
