No. 24 Coastal Carolina baseball shocks No. 2 North Carolina State in Raleigh

April 11, 2019

Outfielder Parker Chavers hit a two-run homerun in the top of the ninth to put the Chanticleers up 7-6 over the second-ranked N.C. State Wolfpack in what was a huge victory for a CCU team that has been scuffling in their last few games.

There were five lead changes in the contest and both teams scored at least one run in the first, third, fifth, and sixth innings. As each team’s offenses were trading blows, the respective pitching staffs were tasked with maintaining whatever miniscule lead each team had for as long as they could. CCU sent six pitchers to the bump, with Trevor Damron picking up the win in relief. Not to be outdone, N.C. State used nine pitchers, with Kent Klyman suffering the loss after giving up the game-winning blast to Chavers.

In addition to Chavers, Kieton Rivers, Zach Biermann, and Jake Wright, all contributed a homerun in the contest, to lead the Chanticleers. Corey Wood and Scott McKeon each added two hits of their own.

N.C. State was led offensively by Patrick Bailey and Evan Edwards who each went yard to round out the six totally homeruns hit on the night.

The victory proved to be a revenge game after the Wolfpack after N.C. State came to Coastal on Feb. 24 and defeated the Chanticleers 7-6 in 11 innings. The Chanticleers had led the Wolfpack for much of the game only to have N.C. State claw back and sneak away with the win.

Defeating a team with the talent that N.C. State has should surely give the No. 24 Chanticleers a bump in the next rankings, but regardless, Coastal will look to build momentum coming off such a huge win as they travel to Little Rock for a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 12. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
