CCU women’s volleyball starts season with a new record


On Friday, Sept. 13, 2019, the Coastal Carolina women’s volleyball team travelled to Towson, MD, to participate in the Towson Invitational.

The CCU team played in two games on Friday, the first game against Albany University. CCU won the match 3-1. CCU held the lead at some point in every set. Ani Bozdeva set a new career record of kills with 20 kills.

The second game was against Towson University, who put up a fight with CCU winning by one match, 3-2. CCU fell to Towson in the first set but was able to defeat Towson in a tie breaker round to 15. Anett Nemeth also set a new record for herself with 26 kills on 53 attempts and only allowing for seven errors. The win allowed the 2019 CCU women’s volleyball team to set the record at Coastal for the best starting record: 8-0.

CCU’s final game was against Youngstown State, on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019. CCU defeated Youngstown State 3-1, winning the Towson Invitational. This win puts the team’s new season starting record at 9-0. Mariia Levanova claimed her first double-double of the season with 17 kills and 11 digs, a team high.

Winning the Towson Invitational also set the record at Coastal for being the first time the team has won the first three non-conference tournaments.

Bozdeva and Nemeth were named to the Towson Invitational All-Tournament Team. Bozdeva was also named the overall tournament MVP.

Iowa City is the next game’s location, with CCU set to play in the CY-Hawk Series on Friday, Sept. 20, 2019.

The 2019 Sun Belt season opener, against Georgia Southern, for the CCU women’s volleyball will be at 6:30 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 27, 2019 in the HTC Center.
