CCU women’s soccer has tough weekend but ends with a win


The CCU women’s soccer team took on Georgia Southern, on Friday, Sept. 20, 2019.

Coastal Carolina put up a fight against the Eagles, but in the end, GA Southern took the win, 0-1. Despite the loss, Coastal Carolina had more shots than the Eagles. Megan Brouse, freshman forward, took the first shot on goal of the game in the first half, missing wide.

At the half, the game was tied, 0-0.

Within the last five minutes of the game, Brooke Barrett shot on Coastal for her first season goal, bringing the game to 0-1.

Mackenzie Gibbs, junior midfielder, had the most shots of the team, totaling in three. Gibbs was followed by Loranna Austin and Megan Brouse with two. The goalie, Rylee Atterbury, had two saves during the game and only missed blocking one goal.

On Sunday, Sept. 22, CCU women’s soccer took on Troy University. This was the third time Coastal had faced Troy, and CCU looked to maintain its winning streak against Troy. The weather was hot and windy- noticeably tiring the athletes as the first half lasted around fifty-five minutes instead of the standard forty-five minutes.

In the first half, Coastal’s midfielder, Mackenzie Gibbs, claimed the first goal of the game off of a penalty kick. Troy scored on Coastal immediately following Coastal’s goal. The score at the end of the half was 1-1.

The start of the second half comprised on a steady back and forth on the field. When Coastal got a corner kick, Callie Hawkins, midfielder, took the kick and Gabby Smychynsky, senior defense, headed the ball into the goal.

The score at the end of the game, 2-1. Another win for CCU!

The CCU women’s soccer team will host Appalachian State, at the CCU soccer stadium on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019.
