Texas State breaks CCU’s eight game winning streak


On Friday, Oct. 25, Coastal Carolina women’s volleyball hosted Texas State University in the HTC Center.

Coastal was able to take an early lead in the first match but was unable to secure the win. TSU took the first match, 23-25.

There was an increase of tension in the second match. Ani Bozdeva secured a block at 20-22, getting the ball for Coastal. Anett Nemeth would go on to tie the game with a kill assisted by Brigitta Petrenko. Nemeth would go on to win the game for CCU with another kill. The final score of the second match was 29-27.

Texas State would go on to take matches three and four against Coastal, winning 1-3.

Nemeth led the team in kills with 26 in total. Petrenko also had an outstanding match with 49 attacks, 2 aces, 3 blocks, and 9 digs.

The loss to Texas State marked Coastal’s first conference loss, leaving the Chants record at 8-1.

Coastal went on to host UT Arlington on Sunday, Oct. 27.

Coastal took the first match 23-25. Anett Nemeth killed the ball against UTA with no return to bring the Chants to 24-23. Brigitta Petrenko would go onto to serve to a win, 25-23.

UTA was able to take the second match up against Coastal, 20-25.

CCU rose above the competition and won the third set. Coastal led for most of the match and Petrenko was again able to serve to win. The final score was 25-20.

Unfortunately, UTA would go on to win sets four and five, making them the second team to defeat the Chanticleers this season.

Nemeth came to play, ending the games with 32 kills, 3 aces, and 11 digs. Petrenko was also on fire again with 55 assists, 14 digs, 4 aces, and 4 blocks.

Coastal is now 8-2 in conference play and 18-4 overall. CCU still remains in in first place in the East Division Sunbelt.

Coastal volleyball’s next match-up will be against, South Alabama at SAU, on Nov. 1, 2019.

The Chanticleers will return home to finish out the season on Nov. 15, 2019 as they host the #2 Troy.
