CCU women's lacrosse begins with winning streak

The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team travelled to Norfolk, Va. to play their first game of the 2020 season against Old Dominion, on Feb. 8, 2019.

Old Dominion claimed the first goal of the game, but Coastal’s Megan Bozzi scored a goal and brought the game back to a tie with more than 25 minutes left in the first half.

Senior midfielder Abbey Buchanan claimed the second goal for Coastal and Bozzi turned around and scored again, bringing the score to 3-1. Senior attacker Lyla Robinson was next to score for Coastal, and with the help of Samantha Courtmanche, brought CCU’s to 4-1.

Old Dominion did not give up the fight, and Glory Johnson scored against CCU goalie, Regan McComb. Robinson was determined to keep Coastal at a lead and claimed her second goal of the season, bringing the score to 5-2. Johnson scored on Coastal again, her third goal of the game, and brought the score to 5-3.

After back and forth between the teams, Coastal midfielder Hannah Close scored against ODU. Bozzi followed close with her third goal of the game.

With only five minutes left, Megan Kilpatrick scored and brought the first half to a close with the a score of 8-3.

ODU came ready to play in the second half of the game and scored straight away. ODU would go on to score two more goals in the beginning of the second half, bringing the game to 8-6.

Buchanan scored CCU’s first goal of the half while Coastal was a man-up on the field. ODU would turn around and score again as well.

Kilpatrick, assisted by Robinson, scored and again brought Coastal to a two point lead.

ODU would go on to score one more goal during the game. Robinson and midfielder Kiley Davis both scored for Coastal. The final score of the game was 12-8, the first win of the season for Coastal.

CCU’s second game of the season was against Campbell University on Feb. 12, 2019.

Bozzi, already bringing the heat, was the first to score in the game against Campbell. However, Campbell came back with four goals against Coastal, quickly bringing the game to 1-4.

Samantha Courtmanche scored against Campbell and brought the score to 2-4. CCU’s Hannah Close would follow Courtmanche and bring the game to a one point game. Robinson tied the game up and Courtmanche immediately followed her and brought Coastal to a one point lead, 5-4.

Campbell would go on to score two goals after Courtmanche, bringing the score to 5-6. CCU’s Busch would tie up the game again. Campbell would end the first half with a goal and a one point lead against CCU.

CCU’s Lauren Cremen came back from the half and tied the game up. Unfortunately, Campbell followed with a goal and again took the lead.

Courtmanche would tie the game and then go on to score two more goals in a row, bringing the score to 10-8. Cremen, with the help of Courtmanche, scored again for CCU and gave CCU a four point lead.

Campbell scored and brought the game to 11-9. CCU’s Busch and Cremen both scored again, putting CCU ahead by four.

Campbell would go on to score four more goals, sending Coastal to their third game with two wins under their belts.

The CCU’s Women’s Lacrosse will be on Feb. 22, 2019 at Temple University. Their first home game will be on Mar. 15, 2019 against Niagara University.
