Coastal Carolina defeats South Alabama to remain undefeated

Coastal Carolina improved their football record to 7-0 with a 23-6 win over South Alabama on Saturday, Nov. 9.

This 7-0 start, ties the 2019 Appalachian State team for the best start in Sun Belt history. Despite the win, the Chanticleers didn’t move up or down on the AP poll, which led them to maintaining their No. 15 spot. Coastal Carolina is the last undefeated team in South Carolina for the first time ever.

For the second straight game, the Chanticleer defense did not allow a touchdown, holding the Jaguars to just two field goals. The defense was led by senior defensive end, Tarron Jackson, who ended up with 10 total tackles, including 2.5 sacks. Sophomore linebacker Silas Kelly also had a notable stat line with 12 tackles, including a team-leading eight solo tackles.

Offensively, the Chants were efficient as usual, but didn’t score as many touchdowns as the fans are used to seeing. Grayson McCall completed 17 of 24 passing attempts for 209 yards and a touchdown. He was also the team’s second highest rusher with 72 yards on 8 carries.

Sophomore running back Reese White rushed nine times for 81 yards, and junior wide receiver Jaivon Heiligh finished with five receptions for 95 yards, making it his fourth 90+ yard receiving game out of the seven the Chanticleers have played.

Grayson McCall and the Chanticleers will return home for an already sold out game against the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Nov. 21.
