The tradition continues: Homecoming 2020 is here

Homecoming is approaching, so this is the time of year for everyone to get involved with their teal family. This year's theme will be focused on the traditions of Coastal Carolina University.

Director of Student Activities and Leadership Jessica R. Combess has been a part of the Homecoming planning process for the past three years. She said that highlighting as much of CCU, as far as traditions goes, is most important when it comes to enabling and keeping everyone connected on campus.

Combess said, “It is an opportunity for every person to get involved if they choose to.”

The theme for Homecoming 2020 is The Tradition Continues, meaning that CCU will be focusing on traditions that they hold as a teal nation.

Combess said, “Given the fact that we are within a pandemic, we are still operating in the confines of the Coastal Comeback Plan and the standards understandably. We definitely wanted to find a way to celebrate Homecoming and get students to [participate] yet still remain safe.”

She knows that there would have been more in-person events in the absence of COVID-19. Even though surrounding institutions may not be holding a homecoming this semester, CCU  decided to continue their homecoming regardless of the current situation.

The talent show is one of the biggest events to take place during homecoming, and of course, now it has its limitations considering it will be done virtually and will be live streamed for everyone to enjoy.

The Spirit of the Chanticleer will still be awarded to a nominee as usual. This award represents what it means to have school spirit. These individuals are nominated by faculty, staff, students or themselves and for them to have applied they had to have a 2.75 GPA, have good standing within the university and they had to provide a short essay video of what school spirit means to them and talk about a cause or nonprofit that they are passionate about and why.

Combess said, “There were six to eight finalists that were recognized on Monday, Nov. 3, at 3 p.m. on Prince Lawn and two winners; one student’s classes primarily online and the other a student whose classes are primarily on campus.”

Another event that Combess wanted to note and highlight is the importance of Toys for Tots.

She said, “The number of families that are requesting Toys for Tots has gone up essentially due to the pandemic; being out of work and health care cost, a lot of different factors [has increased the need] to provide them with toys for the holidays for their children.”

Donating to Toys for Tots is not just limited to Nov. 4, 2020, it is open for the whole month of November and all of these donated toys will be in the Horry County areas. Please contact The Office of Student Life to make a donation at any time.
